Here is our final map of Wheel Chair Accessibility:

We found that 1 out of every 250 people is in a wheel chair. Because of this high number, we thought that it would be useful and important to create a map showing popular locations that are wheel chair accessible. We mapped out places that we frequently go that are wheel chair friendly. On each point on our map we provided an address and description of the location along with the website of the business and a link to photos of the locations. We found that many restaurants and businesses that we looked at did have wheel chair accessibility which was a really great thing. While there is a need for some improvement, Winter Park is doing pretty well. However, something that is troubling is that most of the sorority houses and fraternity houses are so old that once inside these buildings handicapped people do not have access to the second floor or the basements. Hopefully in the next few years Rollins will able to make some changes in order to make Rollins campus more wheel chair friendly. Our ma provides an interactive map for people in wheel chairs to use in order to find places they may want to go. Instead of having to search for individual businesses and finding out if they were wheel chair friendly, they can now just use our map and click through the different points. Overall, we thought that this was an important social justice issue and we wanted to provide some sort of solution to help out.

This youtube video shows a similar story that took place in Canada where a guidebook was made about wheel chair accessibility in parks and attractions, it’s nice to know that other people have had this similar idea and are trying to make a difference.

You guys did an awesome job with this project. I know that during the renovation of Mayflower Hall over the summer they gave us a wheelchair ramp, but your project does prove a good point…there’s no accessibility between floors!

I think its incredible that the city of Winter Park might get on board with this…best of luck and great accomplishment.
